Tottenham Were Back to First-Team Training Following a Coronavirus Outbreak in the Club

The Premier League match of north London football club Tottenham Hotspur was postponed due to a critical Covid-19 outbreak within the club on Sunday.

The Premier League match of north London football club Tottenham Hotspur was postponed due to a critical Covid-19 outbreak within the club on Sunday.

The Covid-19 outbreak in Spurs

Five club employees and eight Tottenham players were tested positive of having the coronavirus, which urged the Europa Conference League draw against Rennes to be postponed on Thursday.

The Spurs had requested the organizers of Premier League to delay their trip this weekend to the Annex Stadium and the permission was granted by the league on Thursday.

Rescheduling request

According to the official statement released by Tottenham, they said, “We are confirming the postponement of our Premier League fixture at Brighton and Hove Albion on December 12, following a decision from the board meeting of the Premier League this afternoon.”

“The decision of the Premier League Board to postpone the match was in accordance with the guidelines issued by the medical advisers to the Board, indicating that the health and safety of the staff and players are the number one priority. The rescheduling of the fixture will be announced soon.”

“The request to postpone the match was requested by the club due to an increase of the number of the infected individuals of the Covid-19 cases in the club, which consists of players and key personnels.”

“We sincerely apologize to the nuisance that the situation caused to Rennes and Brighton and their supporters.”

Safety measures

On Wednesday, one of the immediate measures that Tottenham took was to close their first-team training facility in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

The supposed Premier League match next week on Thursday against Leicester was also casting doubts to be made possible because of this severe situation in Tottenham because the squad has been impacted by a less rampant Covid-19 outbreak.

A severe problem for the squad

The Foxes’ manager Antonio Conte was visibly emotional regarding the outbreak during his press meeting prior to the Rennes match on Wednesday.

According to Conte, he said “One of the problems is that the number of coronavirus cases are increasing daily. Those who weren’t positive yesterday were positive now and we continue to do contact tracing for individuals who were positive of the virus. This matter is of serious significance.”

“The current situation is severe and the ongoing infection is deemed highly contagious. We are not certain of what will happen tomorrow and it is completely daunting to us.”

The postponement of several matches of Tottenham is critical and may cause detrimental scheduling conflict for the clubs later on when they get out of the woods. The club has already had problems at their Premier League match at Burnley back in November which were postponed due to the snow.

Aftermath

The talks about the rescheduling of the match against Ligue 1 club Rennes was currently in progress at UEFA. According to the rules, the deadline for all the group games to be completed was due on December 31.

It is understandable that there could be room for a solid strategy for Spurs to pull off before the year ends to accommodate the domestic schedule next year.

Although Brighton understood Tottenham’s plight, Rennes on the other hand was very upset about the postponement of Thursday’s game.

The French club who were on a winter break on December 22, even accused Tottenham of “London fog” by not disclosing the total number of coronavirus cases that they had and informing them that the game will be called off at the last minute just in time they have already arrived in England.

Rennes has returned to France on Thursday stating that they “hope that respect for both the club’s interests will prevail in the possible rescheduling of the match.”
